Singapore Dreaming...

Had caught this lovely gem of a local film with my mom and sister on Sunday. It was a heartfelt examination of the Singaporean psyche and made us questioned the rat race that we seemed to have been born into here.

The movie evolves around the lives of the Loh family and their aspirations to improve themselves in pursuit of the so-called Singapore Dream of the 5Cs (only to result in the inevitable 6th C: the Coffin). Following a sudden change in their circumstances, each character will come to terms with their own desires and make the choices in their lives that they have long denyed themselves.

The film was mostly in Hokkien with bits of Singlish and Mandarin which adds to the local colour and emotional attachment. There are so many scenes in the film that resonates with our personal circumstances. It didn't help that the film was set in Toa Payoh where I grew up with my grand dad in a 2 bedroom flat not too far away.

It was truely a film made by Singaporeans for Singaporeans.
