What a wonderful trip!
A simple escapade to Bangkok to avoid THE question (!!!) turned out to be a foray into the depths of our favourite second home. Instead of the usual spots, we made it a point to check out new places in the city. And we fell in love with Krung Thep all over all. Its amazing how the Big Mango continues to excite the senses beyond the tired tourist stretch.
1. Siam@Siam
We spent 4 nights at this hip upcoming hotel parked right next to MahBoonKrong (MBK). Lovely rooms dripping with industrial chic, infinity pool overlooking the National Stadium, prompt Thai service with a smile. And of course yummy breakfasts with guava juice.

2. Pre-New Year drinks at Sky Bar @ Sirocco
Stunning. Being on top of Bangkok. With a view to boot. Make it a point to have a drink at the Sky Bar on top of the 64 storey tall State Tower... even though the price are high enough to make you keel over.

3. Dinner for 2 @ Bed Supperclub
Part I of the prize I won in an amazing online Christmas raffle organised by some of my favourite food bloggers. Each US$10 ticket goes towards a prize of your choice donated by F&B establishments across the globe, some of them ardent food bloggers themselves. Thanks to the amazing prizes and some fantastic people, the 2006 raffle had raised a spectacular total of US$60, 925 in support of the UN World Food Programme.
The great people at Bed Supperclub together with our favourite Cambodian food correspondent, had kindly donated a dinner for two, courtesy of the new Kiwi exec chef Paul Hutt. Although drinks were not included in the prize, I was pleasantly surprised when the manager refused to let us pay for our Martinis.
We had a great time. The food was quite good and I absolutely loved the venison carpaccio even though my medium rare tenderloin arrived well-done.

4. Customised food tour of Bangkok with RealThai.
Part II of the prize. We spent an amazing Tuesday morning exploring the markets and street food of Bangkok with RealThai aka Austin. Always animated and encyclopedic in his knowledge of Thai food, Austin had uncovered for us a fascinating and often-unexplored side of the city.

One of the highlights of the tour was Thanon Tanao, a street in old Bangkok which is just a foodie's paradise. Our mid-morning snack was a very delicious phat see iw and my favourite raad na which is very similar to hor fun with pork. And just right next door is the traditional 5 seater, Chotechitr, as highlighted in the New York Times.

It was truely an awesome and eye opening experience. Austin also conducts personalised walking tours of the city and will customise the itnerary according to your tastes and activity level.
