Elderly snatch theft and rape cases up

The number of rape cases saw the highest percentage increase of 32 per cent in the first half of this year compared with the same period last year.

This is according to the latest crime statistics from the Singapore Police Force.

Cases rose from 53 to 70 but Senior Assistant Commissioner Soh Wai Wah says there's no cause for alarm as 90 per cent of the cases involved offenders known to their victims.

What the police are concerned about is the rise in elderly snatch theft victims, who doubled from 43 to 88 in the January to June period.

This, in spite of continuous public education through the media and volunteer Crime Prevention Ambassadors.

Most of the elderly victims were females and returning home alone from their daily activities like marketing.

Such cases helped bump up the overall snatch theft cases from 276 to 342.

Mobile phone theft cases also rose as did those involving motor vehicles.

The only major crimes to record a fall are housebreaking and murder.

From 12 cases in the first half of last year, the number of murder cases fell to 6 for the same period this year.

All murder cases have since been solved.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Soh says while overall crime has risen, it's a marginal 0.2 per cent difference.

"Overall crime has remained at same level as last year so the crime situation is under control Nevertheless we appeal to members of the public to continue to be vigilant and be careful and cautious and deny any would-be criminal any opportunity to strike. We're grateful to the public for heeding our call to make crime prevention a lifestyle."

So a woman being raped is not doing enough to deny her father or grandfather an opportunity to have her?

Hmmm... the boys in blue need to relook their priorities.
