Nanjing nightmare
Ok sorry a bit late. I needed the time to get over the horrors I endured that long Mid-Autumn Festival weekend in Nanjing.
5 reasons why this is one scary holiday.
1. The journey.
Lesson A. If you arrive less than 10 minutes before the scheduled departure train for your train at Shanghai Railway station, you are considered to be LATE for the train and will not be permitted entry onboard. They will actually close the gates to you ignoring your plaintive cries.

TOO BAD. NO REFUND. TOUGH LUCK. YOU WALK TO NANJING FOR ALL WE CARE.
Lesson B. If you are for some reason late for the train, don't EVER EVER take the 3 hour bus ride to Nanjing from the Shanghai Long Distance Bus Terminal behind the railway station. Unless you want to spend the first 8 hours of your holiday in a badly ventilated bus with a horde of unwashed passengers in some traffic jam from hell with no toliets to get into Nanjing at 2am in the morning with all the taxi drivers still asleep.

Just cancel your reservation at the Sheraton Nanjing and go home to watch DVDs all weekend.
2. The Memorial to the 1937 Nanjing Massacre
This is one striking place. Although it is doubtful that sticking a finger up to the neo-conservative Japanese revisionists would ever justify the very public display of the remains of the victims killed during the Rape of Nanjing, the Nanjing authorities have really outdid themselves with this stark and moving tribute.

Not that some of the people of China appreciates the significance. Saw one of them spit into the Peace Pond shortly after this photo was taken.
3. The climb up Purple Golden Mountain (by cable car)
Lesson C. Next time, walk.

See how high!!!! Hold the rusty metal "safety" bar until hand no blood.

Lesson D. Beer helps with heights.
4. The local fashion scene.
Lesson E. Convince Zara to open a branch in Nanjing.

5. The food
Lesson F. Ask Carls Jr open shop in Nanjing.

I was so glad to be back in Shanghai with civilised food.
