ท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ (Suvarnabhumi) - 1 Oct 2006

"The Golden Land"

Nothing prepared me for the immense scale of the terminal. Very post-industrial chic inspired by the Deep Space Nine space station in Star Trek.

Picking up your friends can be exasperating when the arrivals hall is only half the size it should be.

Lots of people looking lost.

Checked luggage have been known to take a very long time to arrive.

Despite the uber-German designs, you know that you've landed in Thailand when you see:

(1) Titan-sized guardian statues.

(2) Throne room right after Immigrations. For royalty. Not spirits.

(3) Naga and spirits greeting you in the transit area.

Food options in transit area are seafood bars and very crowded Royal Silk lounges. No KFC.

Its a long and lonely walk to the gate. (No travelators)

You see signs of disrepair everywhere. This airport is not ready for business.

A place full of promise. Can't wait to see if when it has its act together.
