Coup d'état

After months of rumours, the Thai army have moved against the oft-criticised Thaksin government. This latest coup, 15 years after the last violent incident, was rumoured to be supported by the Thai royal family. It will be interesting to see how a Muslim army commander-in-chief will perform as acting Prime Minister. Pics here.





This development comes as a surprise for most of us here in Singapore, having not seen a change of regime in so many years. In principle, a military usurpation of power is a violation of the democractic process of a country under the rule of law. Ironically, after our beloved MM Lee's speech about committing to the preservation of the hybrid political system here, some of us wonder how change would ever come about in this country.





In the meantime, life in Bangkok goes on. My trip next week is in limbo. Just as well, the new Suwarnabhumi airport was supposed to be confusing and way out in the boonies.
